Established in 1994, Phoenix House Academy in Los Angeles is an evidence-based residential treatment program for 110 youth ages 13-18 affected by addiction and/or mental health disorders. Residents attend a fully-accredited on-site high school while receiving comprehensive drug and alcohol addiction treatment services, including: individual and group counseling (mental health, substance use disorder, trauma, and anger management); family therapy (parent education, group counseling); art and music therapy; cultural and recreational activities; and a broad range of life skills training. The Academy’s extensive grounds feature two-person bedrooms, classrooms, sports facilities, gyms, a computer lab, and a fully-equipped professional music studio – home to the Phoenix Rising Music Program.
Phoenix House Academy’s Outpatient Services offer outpatient and intensive outpatient day treatment to teens ages 13-20 who struggle with substance-use-related disorders. Services include individual and group counseling: mental health counseling; case management; educational workshops; family services; and substance-free recreational opportunities. Evidence-based addiction and mental health treatment techniques are used to address such issues as trauma, depression, anger management, and behavioral disorders. Youth and family counseling is also available in the community in local high schools. Drug and Alcohol Prevention Services are provided in schools and communities of north-east San Fernando Valley.
The Academy is licensed by the California Department of Alcohol and Drug Programs. It is fully accredited to provide treatment for co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders by the California Alliance of Child and Family Services and by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF).

Our experienced staff is skilled at working with all types of insurance providers to help you access the treatment you need. Phoenix House is an in-network provider for most major insurance carriers, managed care programs, and Medicaid.
Do your programs accept insurance?
Yes, Phoenix House California accepts most insurance plans, including: Aetna, Anthem Blue Cross, LifeSynch-Humana, APS Healthcare, MHN, Cigna, HealthNet, and Value Options. We also accept United Behavioral Health and partners.
What is your policy towards involving family members?
Family involvement is an integral component in the treatment process. Individualized treatment plans are designed by each client and his or her therapist, taking into account goals and provisions for continued employment and/or education.
Our Core Services
Assessment and Evaluation Services
In various locations, Phoenix House provides independent assessments and evaluations of substance use disorders as requested by individuals, families, schools and the Criminal Justice System.
Adolescent Residential Services
The Phoenix House Academies for Youth offer intensive substance abuse and mental health services with high school academic programs in CARF-accredited facilities.
Mental Health Services
Substance abuse and addiction often go hand-in-hand with mental health issues, and Phoenix House offers treatment programs designed specifically to meet this need.
Prevention and Education Services
Phoenix House’s prevention and education services highlight the dangers of drug use, reinforce self-esteem, and educate youth and adults to make positive choices.
Adolescent Outpatient Services
Phoenix House adolescent programs provide treatment in a safe, supportive environment that gives youth and their families a chance to break free from substance abuse.
Los Angeles County Office of Education maintains a fully accredited high school on-site. Academic tutoring is available for those who are unable to attend school on a daily basis. In an effort to create educational continuity, all students are instructed through self-paced educational materials.
Our services include counseling, family therapy, parent education, and group activities for families of adolescents in treatment.
Recreation and Fitness Program
A full-time coordinator and team of coaches and recreation therapists assess each teen’s fitness level and help them set personal fitness goals. Three times a week, teens participate in planned indoor and outdoor activities, which are supplemented by dance, yoga, and recreational outings.
Phoenix Rising Music Program
An on-site music studio gives our residents an extraordinary creative outlet where they can write and record their own music and an opportunity to learn valuable skills.
Medical and Nursing Services
Health, medical, and dental services are provided by staff nurses, consulting physicians, psychiatrists, psychologists, and dentists, and through partnerships with community clinics and medical centers.
Young residents enrolled in treatment participate in community outreach activities to teach their peers about the dangers and consequences of substance abuse. Residents appear as speakers at sessions, classes, and panels held at local schools, community centers and other locations.
Speak Up! Workshops
These small group workshops are designed to promote better understanding between at-risk youth and the police.
Phoenix Rising Music
With the help of Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter Kara DioGuardi, teen clients in our Phoenix Rising Music Program tell their stories and heal through song. In their own words, our state-of-the-art recording studio and expressive arts program exemplifies “love, vision, joy, and determination.”
